Source
The video list, comment labels, summaries, topics, related-video graph and search embeddings come from the data export published by HackerTube, the site Andrej Karpathy built with Claude on 31 October 2026. HackerTube in turn derives from the open-index/hacker-news archive of Hacker News comments, 2007–2026. Hacker News data is provided by Y Combinator; every comment remains the work of its author and links back to the original thread.
License
The export is released under the Open Data Commons Attribution License (ODC-By) v1.0, like the HN archive. That license allows any use, including commercial, provided the source is credited. This site credits HackerTube and the open-index dataset in the footer of every page and here.
Suggested attribution if you reuse anything from this site: "Data from HackerTube (hackertube.org) and the open-index/hacker-news dataset, ODC-By 1.0, via HackerTube Watch (hackertube.page)."
What is not redistributed
- YouTube's own metadata (descriptions, view counts, durations, publish dates, tags). Where shown, it is fetched from the YouTube Data API at build time and displayed with attribution to YouTube; it is not included in any download from this site.
- The video files. Everything plays from YouTube through the privacy-enhanced embed.
- Full usernames in the related-video graph: the upstream export contains counts only, and so does this site.
Getting the data
Download the original export from hackertube.org/about; it includes a DATA.md written for AI agents. The build your own page walks through the files. This site also publishes two small derived files for its own client-side features: /similar.json (top-8 similar video ids per video, from the embeddings) and /cards.json (title, channel and recommendation summary per video). Same license, same credit.
Corrections
Labels and summaries were written by an AI model and are a few percent wrong. If a page about your video or your comment is mislabeled, write to hello@hackertube.page with the video id and it will be fixed in the next build. Requests to remove a video from this site are honored; the comment itself stays on Hacker News, where it was always public.
