This was the topic of a video [0] posted by CGP Grey on the 25th August. Not mainstream, but I think the idea has been popular for a while [1]. >6.4 >A manager went to his programmers and told them: "As regards to your work hours: you are going to have to come in at nine in the morning and leave at five in the afternoon." At this, all of them became angry and several resigned on the spot. >So the manager said: "All right, in that case you may set your own working hours, as long as you finish your projects on schedule." The programmers, now satisfied, began to come in at noon and work to the wee hours of the morning. [0] [this video] [1] [link]
Some [1] propose to split the week in a different way, so that you take a day off on Wed and one on Sun and you work on Sat, so Fri becomes like Thu. [1] [this video]
I'm in school right now, so I can't comment on this, but I would love a 4 day week with Wednesday as the extra day off. I've tried it, and it's just amazing. [1] Relevant CGP Grey video. --- [1] [this video] .
So this is referenced in a way (tailored for 5d week) in CGP Grays video: [this video] I actually did this for a couple months with permission from my boss. It went well, but at the end of it I was talking with my SO and they said that it was nice but they also rarely got to see me. They worked on Wednesday and I didn’t, and I worked on Saturday and they didn’t so we basically only saw each other on Sunday. Just my 2c. If I was single I would almost certainly work Weekend Wednesday.
> I can definitely see a point to making it Wednesday You probably agree a lot with CGP Grey on this video[1] I really liked when Cloudera did "unplug days" which basically threw in an extra day off every 3 weeks and a double extra off every 3 months, but it was a Friday so there was always the temptation to drive out somewhere or go do something for 3 days. If it had been Wednesdays, we'd have just slept and relaxed instead. 1 - [this video]
I feel like it would be better to split up the current streak of 5 working days we have than to clump it into 9 days of continuous working. You would definitely get burnt out after 9 days, as people already get burnt out after 5. We should go in the opposite direction - something like Weekend Wednesday [1] appeals to me. That way, you always have a break to look forward to, and you don't feel like your off days are unproductive. For longer breaks and international travel, that's what vacations and holidays could be for. I could see that a one-day weekend might not seem long enough for some people, in which case I have a compromise: the current system. It isn't perfect for everyone, and isn't immune from change, but it's a decent enough middle ground. [1] CGP Grey - [this video]
Weekend Wednesday as alternative to long work streaks
This is wonderful and something I'm aiming to do in the future, to some degree due to the Weekend Wednesday video from CGP Grey and some other places making strong cases for a 4 day workweek Could you explain what other copernican moments have you experienced? [0] [this video]
