Years with an HN recommendation, 2007–2026
HN recommends it as a concise, chart-backed explanation of the economics behind anti-establishment politics.
Mark Blyth's 2016 Brown University lecture on global Trumpism, explaining the rise of populism through economics, the decline of Western middle classes and revolt against technocracy.
“which concisely outlines the economics behind the decline of western middle classes” (HN, 2016)
If you have the time and patience to listen to it I strongly recommend listening to Mark Blyth's 2016 lecture entitled "Global Trumpism" where as a political economist he discusses the implications of Keynsian economics, Neoliberalism and the class revolt we now see around the world. [this video]
Political economist on Keynesianism, neoliberalism and the global class revolt
There is a rapidly growing group of people that are tired of the status quo. They are reacting strongly against the neoliberal and technocratic establishment. To the very large masses of blue collar workers, globalism means watching their jobs move to cheaper markets. This is the environment where populist movements arise, which are not tied to traditional right/left politics. Hence the rise of populists like Trump, anti-establishment reactions like brexit, and a long list of similar movements that have been popping up around the world. For a good explanation of this (with charts!), see Mark Blyth's recent lecture[1]. [1] [this video]
This was ignored when I tried to post it recently, but maybe now is the time for Brown U. Prof. of Political Economy Mark Blyth's discussion of "Global Trumpism" - the discontent with the establishment and general revolt against technocracy and globalism. Thomas Frank on Listen Liberal: [link] I also suggest the following talk by Mark Blyth: [this video] which concisely outlines the economics behind the decline of western middle classes, and the link to sentiment against mainstream political parties.
