HN recommends it whenever cloud egress costs come up, since it gives concrete numbers on real bandwidth costs versus cloud pricing.
Kyle Drake of Neocities explains the bandwidth pricing pitfalls of the big cloud providers. He describes how to run high-volume, bandwidth-heavy infrastructure far more cheaply, including through co-location.

The guy who runs the site gave a talk a while back about how crazy cheap it is to host it, and why cloud vendors like Amazon and Google are making suckers out of people. "High Volume, Bandwidth Heavy Infrastructure On The Cheap" [this video] And I'm pretty sure he's also cryptocoin-rich, anyway.
I agree with charging the "appropriate amount", but that's not what AWS and the other hosting providers are offering though. They are offering you a price that is vastly different than what it actually costs. Instead hosts like Hetzner and OVH uses a price closer to the true cost for bandwidth for their users. Take a look at their dedicated hosting and the pricing. I'm not sponsored by either, but I am a happy user of Hetzner.
