Years with an HN recommendation, 2007–2026
HN cites it for Orkney's surplus renewable energy, hydrogen facilities and EV uptake.
Fully Charged's first of three reports from the Orkney Islands, covering the Surf 'n' Turf project that uses surplus wind and tidal power for hydrogen and electric vehicles.
“Orkney in particular has so much renewable energy that they're encouraging people to get EVs to soak up the excess” (HN, 2017)
The Orkney Isles are setting the example in the UK. Going green and making progress with it is also quite good for the community, not to mention the balance sheet. Another future is definitely possible and the folks in the Orkney Isles are an inspiration. The Fully Charged Show on YouTube has been following progress for years, here is a recent three part series on wind, hydrogen and big batteries in the Orkney Isles: [this video] I highly recommend liking, subscribing and giving a thumbs up to Fully Charged Show. Anyone that enjoyed Red Dwarf or Scrapheap Challenge will know the presenter.
Series on wind, hydrogen and big batteries in Orkney
Islands are generally good for EVs, precisely because you can't drive that far. Orkney in particular has so much renewable energy that they're encouraging people to get EVs to soak up the excess because they have limited connectivity to export the excess back to the mainland: [this video]
I've heard about Orkney quite a lot, I think it must simply be an innovation hub. That I can think off the top of my head: - Orbital marine, making tidal turbine [link] - Their grid [link] - Their Hydrogen facilities, using extra renewable [this video]
