Years with an HN recommendation, 2007–2026
HN recommends it as an accessible in-depth explanation of how Webb works and why its deployment was remarkable.
Real Engineering explains the engineering behind the James Webb Space Telescope, including its folding mirror, sunshield, orbit and cooling systems, and why deployment was so difficult.
“For some context around what makes this deployment so remarkable, watch this[0] video” (HN, 2022)
If you're interested in a more indepth view of how it's supposed to work, Real Engineering did a video about it recently. No idea if what they're saying is true however, I've no knowledge about the domain. [this video]
In-depth view of how the telescope is supposed to work.
For some context around what makes this deployment so remarkable, watch this[0] video that talks about the engineering/building aspects of the James Webb [0] [this video]
The fact that the telescope's cryocooler is acoustically symmetrical such that any vibrations made by each cylinder, and the actual flow of gas, is near-perfectly cancelled out is nothing short of amazing. [0] Real Engineering made a video that covered this and more, which is well worth a watch. [1] [0] [link] [1] [this video] (The Insane Engineering of James Webb Telescope)
Covers the cryocooler's acoustic symmetry and more.
